Boundaries are not walls.

Boundaries are not walls.

We talk about boundaries as if they are defensive shields we build to keep toxic people out. But boundaries have very little to do with other people. They are simply the physical map of your own values. If you don't know where you end and your business begins, someone else will draw that line for you.

The 'just this once' tax.

We make exceptions because we want to be liked. We take the Sunday call, we accept the lower rate, we let the client shift the scope. We tell ourselves it's good customer service. But every exception is a quiet lie. It tells the other person that our rules are negotiable, and it tells ourselves that our time is cheap. The tax on these exceptions is paid in resentment—and resentment is the absolute death of creative work.

Map your limits.

A clean boundary is quiet. It doesn't need to be shouted or defended with a long explanation. 'I don't work on weekends' is a complete sentence. You do not need to explain that it's because of your kids, or your mental health, or your chores. The moment you offer an excuse, you invite the other person to negotiate. Keep it simple. Let the border be clear.

"You do not need to explain your boundaries. The moment you start defending your limits, you've already let them be crossed."

Want to explore how these structures operate in your own professional and personal life? The Babcock Method is designed to uncover and rewrite these cycles.
